EFS data is very important and if you are planning to make any modifications to your Android device, backing up your EFS data can protect you from the consequences of any inadvertent errors you might make.

What is EFS?

EFS is basically a system directory. It contains important information about the following:

1. IMEI
2. Wireless MAC address
3. Baseband version
4. Product code
5. System ID
6. NV data.

EFS data can be corrupted when you install Custom ROMs so before doing so, it’s usually a good idea to back it up.

Why might you lose EFS Data?

• If you manually downgrade or upgrade the official firmware. This is a problem that rarely occurs when installing OTA.
• You’ve installed a corrupt custom ROM, MOD or Kernel.
• There is a clash between an old and a new Kernel.

How-to back-up/restore EFS?

1. EFS Professional

This is a great tool that was created by XDA member LiquidPerfection to save and restore EFS data. It’s very easy to work with and has the following features:

• Allows you to backup and restore images in compressed archives (*.tar.gz format)

How you can use EFS Professional:

1. First, download EFS Professional and extract it on the desktop. here
2. Connect a Galaxy Device to the PC. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on the device.
3. As Administrator run EFS Professional.exe
4. Click on EFS Professional.
5. Another window will open and, once the device has been detected, this window will contain info on the device’s model number, firmware version, root and BusyBox version and others.
6. Click on the Back-Up option.
7. Click on Device Filter and from there, select your phone model.
8. EFS Professional should now show you the System Partition where you can locate your info. Click Select All.
9. Click on Back-Up. EFS data will be backed-up on both the phone and the connected PC. The back-up created on the PC will be found in the EFS Professional folder located inside “EFSProBackup”. It will look like: “GT-xxxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx.tar.gz”

Restore your EFS:

1. Connect the device and the PC.
2. Open EFS Professional.
3. Click on the drop-down menu of “Restore Options” then select the Previous Backed-up file.
4. You should be able to format the current corrupted EFS file.
5. Click the Restore Button.

This tool can be used to backup EFS Data as well and supports all Samsung Devices with the exception of Qualcomm-based LTE Device.

Before we begin, take note of the following features of kTool:

• Requires a rooted device.
• Will only work on the following:
  1. Galaxy S2
  2. Galaxy Note
  3. Galaxy Nexus
  4. Galaxy S3 (international I9300, not US variants)

1. Copy and paste the file you downloaded to the root of the device’s SDcard.
2. Boot into CWM recovery.
3. In CM, select: Instal zip>Choose zip from SDcard.
4. Select the file you downloaded and select yes to let the installation proceed.

4. Terminal Emulator

This tool can be used to backup the EFS data in devices that are rooted but do not have a custom recovery installed.

How-To Use Terminal Emulator

1. Download and install Android Terminal Emulator here
2. Open the App. If you are asked for SuperSU permission, grant it.
3. When the Terminal appears, type the following commands according to what you want the tool to do:
   • Backup EFS on Internal SD Card:

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 of=/storage/sd card/efs.img bs=4096

• Backup EFS on External SD Card:

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 of=/storage/extSdCard/efs.img bs=4096

If all went well, you should now find your data backed-up in either your internal or external SDcard.

As a final precaution, copy the EFS.img file on to a computer as well.

How-to resort EFS data using Terminal Emulator:

1. Launch the app.
2. Type either of the two commands below in the Terminal:
   • Restore EFS on external SD Card:

dd if=/storage/sdcard/efs.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=4096

• Restore EFS on external SD Card:

dd if=/storage/extSdCard/efs.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=4096

Note: If you find the Terminal Emulator is not working, try installing the Root Browser app. When it is installed, open the app and then go to dev/block directory. Copy the exact path of the EFS Data files and edit them accordingly: dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 of=/storage/sd card/efs.img bs=4096

4. TWRP/CWM/Philz Recovery

If you have either of these three custom recovery’s installed on your device, you can use them to back-up your EFS data.

1. Turn off the device and boot it on into custom recovery by pressing and holding down on the volume, home and power buttons.
2. Look for the create EFS data option.

Install XXKPA Firmware on Galaxy S2 to get Android 4.0 ICS

1. Download XXKPA firmware. Filename: I9100XXKPA_I9100OXAKPA_OXA.rar. Size: 353 MB →Download Link. [password: samfirmware.com]
2. Extract the downloaded file ‘I9100XXKPA_I9100OXAKPA.rar’ of XXKPA firmware to get these 7 files (the file-names may end with .tar instead of md5 as the file extension is hidden, so don’t worry):
   1. GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXAKPA.tar.md5
   2. I9100_CODE_I9100XXKPA_CL51925_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
   3. I9100_EFS_I9100XXKP9_CL45181_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 [not to be used]
   4. I9100_KERNEL_I9100XXKP9_CL45181_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5 [not to be used]

3. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
4. Now, put the Galaxy S2 in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume Down + Home + Power. You’ll get an options screen. Press Volume Up now to go to download mode (which is also called Odin mode). This is required to install the XXKPA (or any other firmware) using Odin PC Software.
5. Open Odin (from step 2.6) — double-click the Odin3 v1.83.exe.
6. Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get this message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed. See point 3 above under ‘pre-installation tips’.
7. Select these files in Odin at respective tabs:
   1. Click the PDA Tab, and select I9100_CODE_I9100XXKPA_CL51925_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 (from step 2.2)
   2. Click the Phone Tab, and select MODEM_I9100XXKPA_REV_02_CL1094591.tar.md5(from step 2.5)
   3. Click the CSC Tab, and select GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXAKPA.tar.md5 (from step 2.1)
   4. Click the PIT tab, and select u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit (from step 2.7)
8. Important! On Odin, make sure Re-Partition, Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time check boxes are selected. Do not touch any other check box or tab or anything, except as was required in step 8 above.
9. Double check everything said in step 7 and 8 above. [And, do not use the files in step 2.3 and 2.4 anywhere in Odin]. This is my Odin’s screen while I flashed the XXKPA on my Galaxy S2 — your Odin’s window should look real similar to this:
10. Now, hit the START button to start flashing of XXKPA Android 4.0 firmware on your Galaxy S2. When the XXKPA Android 4.0 firmware has been installed by Odin on your phone, your phone will automatically reboot — and when you see the Samsung logo, you can safely unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. In case it says FAILS (with red background) or nothing seems to be happening, check the Important Note below after step 11 to know what to do.
11. When it has restarted, your Galaxy S2 will be running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) with version being Android 4.0.3, build being XXKPA and Samsung’s custom UI TouchWiz 4 atop it. Check out your Galaxy S2’s android version here: Settings » About Phone.

IMPORTANT NOTE:If Odin doesn’t seem to be progressing/doing anything for more than a minute, or fails to complete the process, do the following:

Disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, turnphone on in Download mode again, and do the procedure again from Step 5.
